City Council Considers Protection for our Park

City Council Considers Protection for our Park

April 25, 2022

At the next City Council Meeting, this Wednesday, April 27th, Joe Moore will make a presentation about Council Initiatives.  Included in this list is the following:

What does this mean?

We all know that the process used in 2020 to advance the Alternative Masterplan was flawed.  Citizens did not like what was proposed in Lakeside Park for a large variety of reasons. We were shut out from the decision making process by our elected representatives.  We need to prevent this from ever happening again in our city.

It is possible to pass an ordinance that requires citizen input in the form of a referendum or at least makes that avenue available to the citizens.  The 920 petition process that took place in 2020 would have enacted an ordinance that would have forced a referendum under certain circumstances.

As the bullet point says, “the legal research and the course of action development are prepared.”  We are thrilled to see the Council working on a protection that the citizens tried to enact in 2020.  We welcome open and detailed discussion on how to move forward and give our citizens a voice in what happens in our park.

Lighthouse Drive Reconstruction Project

Lighthouse Drive Reconstruction Project

April 24, 2022

We are sad to report that the Capstone project has been cancelled.  We are grateful for the enthusiasm the Capstone initially brought to the project and the conversations that were facilitated.

With the halt to the Capstone project, City Staff has been busy working on a plan for reconfiguring the walking paths and parking on Lighthouse peninsula.  A draft plan has been released and will be presented at the Advisory Parks Board Meeting on Monday, April 25th starting at 5:30pm.

You can see the plan above.  A larger copy of the plan can be downloaded by clicking HERE or on the photo above. cance

Your input is essential as we consider changes in our park.  The meeting agenda shows that audience comments will be after the presentation.  You can comment at the meeting in person OR by attending virtually.   Virtual instructions are given below for joining on your computer or by phone.  Remember that you will be commenting on Item D Lighthouse Drive Reconstruction Project.

Tyler Reimer – Capstone Presentation

Tyler Reimer - Capstone Presentation

November 4, 2021

Tyler Reimer is a Landscape Architecture student in his senior year at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  (pictured above with John Papenheim) Tyler selected our Lakeside Park for his Capstone Project.   He spent Monday, Oct 25th in Lakeside Park and then attended the Advisory Parks Board meeting where he gave a presentation, took comments from board members and the public and then guided everyone through an activity to identify areas of concern in the park.

Tyler had large maps of the Lighthouse Peninsula and Frazier Point.  Each person was given a green, pink and yellow sticker to place on the maps.  The stickers symbolize the following:

  • Green- area is fine, leave it alone.
  • Pink – could use some improvement.
  • Yellow – definitely needs improvement.

This activity was a really quick visual way to see how people feel about needs in the park.   You can see the result of the activity in the pictures below.

It was decided at the meeting that there will be an online survey for citizen input on the park.  Stay tuned and be thinking about what you want to see improved and left alone on Lighthouse Peninsula and Frazier Point.

Below are Tyler’s slides from his presentation and maps of the areas of focus.
